In a special and deeply meaningful segment of the NICO General Broker Awards 2025, held in Blantyre, NICO General Insurance hosted an exclusive ceremony dedicated to honouring the recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award—Vaju Morzaria, Henry Sisya, and Wesley Mataka—three distinguished individuals whose careers have helped shape Malawi’s insurance industry over more than four decades.
The event served as a moment of reflection and gratitude, celebrating not just years of service, but the lasting impact of leadership, mentorship, and vision. Speaking during the ceremony, NICO General Chief Executive Officer Donbell Mandala described the award as a tribute reserved for individuals whose influence extends far beyond their professional roles.
“These are individuals who have shaped institutions, mentored generations, and strengthened the very foundation of our industry,” he said.
With careers spanning over 45 years, Morzaria, Sisya, and Mataka were recognised as pioneers who contributed to expanding the reach and understanding of insurance in Malawi during its formative years. They were also celebrated as mentors who nurtured talent many of whom now hold leadership positions across the sector and as steady hands who guided organisations through economic shifts, regulatory changes, and evolving market demands.
Their contribution has been instrumental in transforming insurance into a key pillar of Malawi’s economic resilience. Notably, Wesley Mataka played a key role in advancing professional development within the industry, including contributions to the establishment of local Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) learning programmes, while both Mataka and Sisya shared part of their professional journey at MIBRO (now Marsh), further shaping industry standards.
The ceremony was also graced by the NICO Life Insurance team, led by Chief Executive Officer Wise Chigudu, who delivered the closing remarks, reinforcing the importance of unity across the insurance sector and celebrating the enduring legacy of the award recipients.
In closing, Mandala emphasised that true leadership is defined by impact rather than position, noting that the honourees’ dedication has uplifted the entire industry.
